SERVING OTTAWA WEST
GUEST SPEAKER
Tuesday, October 14, 2008
Janan Mosazai
Mr. Mosazai, originally from Afghanistan, is a graduate journalism student at Carleton University. He was back in Afghanistan for two months between July and September this year visiting family and doing research for his master's thesis. Mr. Mosazai's thesis topic is the history of media in Afghanistan and how non-state, independent media have proliferated since the removal of the Taliban regime from Kabul in late 2001. He will discuss the work he has done in Afghanistan and share his impressions of the media's current status, including the various sources of increasing pressures and intimidation against Afghan media over the past couple of years. Mr. Mosazai will, of course, take questions following his presentation This is a good opportunity to hear about the situation in Afghanistan from someone with first-hand knowledge.

NEW MEMBERS
We extend a warm welcome to two new members, Heather Wallace and Ian Wilson,
who both joined in September:
THANK YOUI have noticed that Kanata PROBUS does not spend much time looking back –– preferring to look ahead to the next meeting or event. However, last month on our 10th Anniversary, we did look back on 10 years of Club activity and the reasons we gather. Seven past Presidents showed up and we remembered two who had passed on. We were presented with two plaques: one from PROBUS Canada presented by Director Peter Doyle; one from the City of Ottawa, signed by Peggy Feltmate and presented by Marianne Wilkinson –– good team work. We sang Happy Anniversary and had a great pot luck lunch - we ate our cake, too! All this was organized by a group of dedicated PROBI –– Pat Thompson, Barbara Stafford, Joyce Shaheen, Mary Mills, Mary Jones, and Don Davis. I know they enjoyed the breakfast meetings - our sincere thanks to them for a job well done!
David Stafford, President
PAT LLOYD
Pat Lloyd passed away after a brief illness on Saturday September 6, 2008. Pat joined the Probus Club in 2003 and served on the Management Committee until last year. She was very active in our group, helping to organize and taking part in our social activities. A good Probus friend is gone but now is at peace.

FUTURE MEETINGS
Our November speaker is traditionally associated with Remembrance. Duane Daly, Dominion Secretary of the Royal Canadian Legion will speak on the Legion’s impressive support to the western hemisphere’s most forgotten veterans of war – support that keeps many of them alive in their declining years. Please note that this meeting will be held on Nov 4, which is the first Tuesday of November.
In our final meeting before Christmas, it has become our custom to invite a speaker from a charitable institution to remind us of the true spirit of giving. This year, Yvonne Darby, Public Relations Manager for The Shepherds of Good Hope will speak on their work in our city.
In June, it seemed as if our speakers on fraud were just getting started when time ran out and we have invited Detective Linda Ogilvie of the Organized Fraud Section, Ottawa Police Service to return as our (solo) January speaker.
All speakers have been confirmed. In the event of a sudden cancellation, Harry Needham will present "A Tale of Six Grandfathers; or how a bunch of vets started up a place called Ontario."
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Euchre
The Euchre Club will meet at Bells Corners United Church at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2008. Instruction readily available for beginners. In subsequent months, the Club will meet on November 7th and December 5th. If you require additional information contact Ruth Howes at 613-726-9540.
Outing to MacKenzie King Estate.
The October outing for the club, to the Mackenzie King Estate , is planned for Thursday October 16th, 2008. We will meet at 11 a.m. in the Estate parking lot first, stroll around and then have lunch at noon. The cost for admission is $8.00 per car, so it is suggested that we car pool to minimize costs.
If we have 20 or more attending, we can arrange for a guided tour after lunch. At this time of the year the tree colours should be magnificent, great for picture taking. Please sign up at the next meeting.
For anyone who needs directions, here’s how to get there: The Estate is located about 25 minutes from downtown Ottawa. Take Highway 5 north to Exit 12. Turn left onto Old Chelsea Road. Old Chelsea Road becomes Meech Lake Road. Turn left onto the Gatineau Parkway and eventually turn right onto the Champlain Parkway. Then, follow the signs to the Estate.
You can also take the Gatineau Parkway north from Alexandre-Tachéé Boulevard in Hull. Follow the Parkway until you see the Champlain Parkway on your left. Turn left onto the Champlain Parkway and follow the signs to the Estate.
If you need more information please contact Pat Thompson at 613-591-1390.
