JUNE 2009
PROBUS CLUB OF KANATA
SERVING OTTAWA WEST
GUEST SPEAKER
TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 2009
10:00 a.m.
Kanata United Church, 33 Leacock Drive, Kanata
Brigadier General (Ret'd) Joe Romanow, RCAF
Brigadier General (retired) Joe Romanow was born in Saskatchewan to parents who had emigrated from Ukraine and he is intensely proud of his Ukrainian heritage. He grew up in Saskatchewan and the second volume of his autobiography, "Young Joe", tells of his youth and youthful escapades. On the commencement of the Second World War, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, becoming a pilot. Originally assigned to a Royal Air Force squadron in the Burmese theatre of operations, he flew supply missions across "The Hump", perhaps the most dangerous aircrew duty of the war, given the high risk not only from Japanese fighters but from the extraordinary weather to which the area is prone. As the RCAF began to move squadrons into the theatre, he transferred to one of "our squadrons" and later saw service in north-west Europe. He remained in the RCAF following the war, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. After retirement, he began to think of writing his memoirs, beginning with the story of his military service. He has now published three volumes and is working on the fourth.
Joe will speak on the topic "So you're thinking of writing your memoirs!"
Please note that the June meeting will be followed by the traditional cold buffet Pot Luck luncheon in the church hall. Please plan to attend and bring cold finger food for the buffet - there will be door prizes as well as good food and fellowship.
